Ormazabal is supplying Medium Voltage switchgear and power distribution solutions for the Gotthard Base Tunnel project in Switzerland.
Due to the complex electrical requirements that equipment must meet in this kind of applications: reliability, autonomy and safety, the CGMCOSMOS feeder and vacuum circuit breaker units were supplied with remote control, protection and automation functions from Ormazabal.
The tunnel is part of the Swiss Alp transit project, it is intended to bypass winding mountain routes and establish a direct route suitable for high speed rail and heavy freight trains. Once completed in 2015, the tunnel will be the largest in the world, with a 57 km length and an estimated budget of 57 billion dollars and is expected to reduce the 3.5 hour travel time from Milan to Zürich by one hour.
