Ormazabal participates as an investor in the largest photovoltaic plant in the Basque Country
As part of our commitment to sustainability, Ormazabal becomes co-owner of the EKIAN solar plant, located in the Arasur industrial area in Álava. Promoted by Grupo KREAN (Corporación Mondragón) and Ente Vasco de la Energía (the Basque Government energy agency), it counts with the investment of 26 associated Basque companies, including Ormazabal.
Additionally, Ormazabal has participated in the equipment of the photovoltaic plant, reflecting our experience and presence in renewable energy projects, which already exceeds 80 GW installed.
The 55 hectares of extension of EKIAN, make it the largest solar plant in the Basque Country, with 67,000 solar panels of 355 watts each and 24 MW installed in total. The plant will be able to reach the annual production of around 40,000 MWh.
The first tests were carried out last December with the charging of an electric bus (Irizar) and the subsequent connection of the plant to the network. The official opening of the park has taken place on Monday, January 27. From this day the produced electricity is already being poured into the distribution network for consumption.
This project is a milestone for renewable energy in the Basque Country, as it will generate energy equivalent to the electrical consumption of 15,000 homes and will double the photovoltaic power installed in the Basque geography. It is a great step in achieving the Basque Government’s Energy Strategy objectives in the field of renewable electricity production by 2030.
