Realizing energy targets together: Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall again trust on medium-voltage technology from Ormazabal for their new wind farmWind energy is one of the most important energy generators in Germany. Wind farms in Germany again accounted for the second largest share of electricity production in 2018 - ahead of hard coal and nuclear energy. In Baden-Württemberg, too, their number is rising continuously. Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall, a pioneer in this field, continues to invest and has connected a new wind farm to the grid. The „Rote Steige“ wind farm in Michelfeld. Three turbines, each with an output of 3.6 MW, generate climate-friendly electricity there today. This is made possible by Ormazabal's medium-voltage substation. The complete solution includes a medium voltage switchgear with telecontrol unit, four circuit breaker cubicle, an auxiliary transformer and two cable feeder cubicles connecting to the wind towers. The service of the company, based in Krefeld, also included coordination of all parties involved. With the completion of the project, which is the continuation of many years of cooperation between Ormazabal and Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall, the goal of obtaining 100 percent of the electricity required in the Stadtwerke's grid area from renewable energy sources, was achieved at an early stage.
Just outside Schwäbisch Hall, between the municipalities of Michelfeld and Mainhardt, lies a wind farm with a total of six wind turbines. The half belonging to Michelfeld, the Rote Steige wind farm, is operated by Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall. The plant was commissioned in May 2018, initially with two wind turbines. The third was installed in November 2018. The Vestas V136 turbines each have an output of 3.6 MW and are forecasted to produce an estimated 26 million kilowatt hours. Ormazabal supplied the substation with medium-voltage switchgear to Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall for them to feed the environmentally friendly electricity generated into the public utility's grid.
A switchgear with telecontrol unit was needed. If a malfunction occurs, such as the failure of a wind turbine, the system status can be viewed remotely and switching operations can be performed. The gas-insulated MV switchgear type gae630 was specifically tailored to the needs of the wind farm. The unusual aspect of this project is that it is fed with three instead of the usual two ring fields. Accordingly, the plant is equipped with three gae-lsv5 circuit breaker cubicles for the grid connection and another one for the wind farm. In addition, Ormazabal supplied the auxiliary transformer including the transformer protection cubicle. The battery system, which supplies the station in the event of a power failure, and the low-voltage distribution system come from external manufacturers and were integrated into the station by us. Ormazabal supplied the transfer station as a complete solution and coordinated the project between the customer and all parties involved.
Milestone reached together
"Combined with the operation of all regenerative generation plants and highly efficient heat-power plants, the own generation in the grid area of Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall already in December 2018 amounted to 100 percent of the electricity requirement," says Steffen Häcker, project manager for the Rote Steige wind farm at Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall GmbH. "This enabled us to achieve our ambitious target of obtaining 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energies by 2030 at an early stage. The completion of the Rote Steige wind farm was a milestone on the way there." Ormazabal's medium-voltage technology made a considerable contribution to this. The wind farm is not the first project that the municipal utilities have successfully implemented in cooperation with Ormazabal: "We have already implemented various projects together. The pragmatic and solution-oriented approach is important to us," says Jens Prinz, Project Manager Network and Plant Construction at Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall GmbH. "As usual, Ormazabal responded to our individual wishes and was always available on site to solve problems. Together, Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall and Ormazabal have brought a project to success that makes an important contribution to climate protection“.
Presence in the region
Ormazabal has a regional office in Baden-Württemberg and will hold its second Technical Day in the Ormazabal sales region south in July 2019. The motto of the event will be "welcome to the future". In addition to an extensive exhibition on medium-voltage technology, Ormazabal and its partners will present further exciting solutions and future-oriented international projects.
