Green generation & storage, Success stories
Lower Road is a 10MW energy storage facility in the South of England. The project was originally developed by Origami Energy and later acquired by Gore Street Energy Storage Fund. NEC Energy Solution was the lead EPC for the project, supported by Nippon Koei Co., with Kirby Group Engineering contracted to carry out the Accounting for Operations (ICP) and Balance of Plant (BoP) works for the project. Ormazabal was awarded the contract for the customer’s 33kV connection point switchgear and substation in 2019 by Kirby Group Engineering.
Kirby Group Engineering is a mechanical and electrical engineering contractor operating in Ireland, the UK and Europe. Ormazabal provides full mechanical and electrical contracting services, as well as specialist high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) design and construction services to clients across a range of sectors including data centres, life sciences, industrial manufacturing, substations and renewable energy, power generation, petrochemical and commercial.
“The Ormazabal UK team was very responsive to all of our questions and adapted to our changing needs. With a short programme to meet, they were proactive from the outset and helped Kirby succeed with our deadlines. We look forward to working with them on future projects.” Derek Farrel, Lead Project Engineer – Kirby Group Engineering.
In addition to supplying and installing our cpg.0 ENA switchgear for grid connection, Ormazabal UK designed and constructed a GRP substation to A measure that fully met the client’s requirements and was delivered within the project’s timeframe.
Ormazabal has extensive experience supplying grid connection panels throughout the UK, with over 500 of our cpg.0 switchgear supplied to this market to date. The protection and control solution was designed and built at our UK facility.

Scope
The client-side center was composed of a 33kV cpg.0 distribution panel, protection and control, low voltage, communications equipment, and air conditioning equipment. The GRP centre was arranged in two sections: one room was allocated to Ormazabal’s cpg.0 IEC switchgear along with protection and control and the other room to the client’s communications and LV equipment.
In addition to supplying the cpg.0 switchgear, Ormazabal UK carried out the full technical design of a control and protection solution, including the Generation Connection scheme (G99) as well as a charging and battery unit integrated into the switchgear. All works were carried out at Ormazabal UK workshops by our team of highly qualified commissioning engineers and technicians.
Following a successful Factory Acceptance Test at our workshops in St Helens, UK, we coordinated closely with our client to ensure the equipment was safely delivered to site prior to final testing and handover to the client.
All project management, logistics, on-site testing and handover were handled by our UK team.
Kirby Group Engineering approached Ormazabal to supply a solution for a 10MW battery grid connection within the UK Power Networks region. Ormazabal’s scope included the supply, delivery, and installation of a 33kV grid connection switchboard, with a complex protection scheme, and a customer-side center.
During this project, we were able to apply our extensive experience to ensure we delivered the complete protection and control solution in full compliance with the Distribution Network Operator’s (DNO) requirements. For the center, Ormazabal worked closely with Kirby Group Engineering to optimize all aspects of the design and provide our client with a solution that met all technical, delivery, and budget requirements of the project. The center design included a steel base with lifting lugs. This allowed for full fit-out and testing prior to handover, minimizing risks to the facility. With the project completed at Ormazabal UK’s facilities, we were able to provide a flexible and rapid response when changes to the scope occurred during production.
