As part of our commitment to combat climate change, a challenge inherent to our activity as a leading player in the electrification and decarbonization of society, at Ormazabal we are mitigating the climate impact of our activity by achieving a 37% reduction in CO2 emissions from industrial production. This new milestone is based on the various energy efficiency initiatives carried out at several of our centers. This marks a new achievement on our path to achieving the intermediate goal of decarbonizing 68% of our activity by 2030 and the more ambitious goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
In addition, this past 2023 we have promoted different initiatives in Bizkaia with the Foundation Lurgaia. Specifically, Ormazabal colleagues have participated in the planting of 900 native trees and shrubs on a 90,847 m2 plot as part of the Undabaso project, which covers 197 hectares. This volunteer effort will offset 260 tons of CO2 over a period of forty years, according to the certificate issued by the Lurgaia Foundation. In addition to offsetting, these projects aim to restore and promote biodiversity and are carried out with a “corporate volunteering” approach, with the participation of around seventy people in 2023
Ormazabal, in its commitment to combat climate change, and as a necessary step to reduce its CO2 emissions, calculates the carbon footprint of its activities, quantifying both direct and indirect emissions. In 2023, in association with the Business and Climate Foundation, we have continued with the pilot project launched in 2022 to calculate the Scope 3 emissions of three organizations within the company.
In addition to this, over the last few years we have worked to ensure that all Ormazabal facilities in Spain and France are powered solely by certified electrical energy of 100% renewable origin. A milestone that we will work to extend to the rest of the countries where we have a presence.
