New energy efficiency plan for homes

The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has presented an update to its housing rehabilitation and energy efficiency agenda that will affect 1,200,000 homes.

The Spanish Government has submitted to the European Commission an update to its housing rehabilitation and energy efficiency plan, called‘Long-term strategy for energy rehabilitation in the building sector in Spain’, which aims to tackle one of the main decarbonization challenges for European countries by 2050, and more specifically that related to the energy efficiency of buildings.

This update, preceded by thepioneering, introduced in 2014, and its predecessor from 2017This directive updates, as mandated by European regulations after three years, measures and scenarios that, according to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, will affect up to 1,200,000 homes in the country and contribute to creating up to 80,000 jobs during its period of validity. The main points of this directive focus on the modernization of these buildings and their heating and air conditioning systems, with a total investment of €25.951 billion.

This roadmap, which aligns with the National Energy and Climate Plan, focuses on one of the areas with the greatest potential for improvement in terms of energy efficiency and consumption. Currently, 30% of the country’s energy consumption occurs in buildings, whether residential or commercial, reaching a figure of 304,276 GWh. The plan aims to reduce this consumption by 36.6% to 192,728 GWh by 2050, by which time energy sources must be entirely free of emissions.

The European Investment Bank and the Real Estate Credit Union are committed to energy efficiency

Last May, news broke that, in order to support Portugal and Spain’s climate goals, both the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Real Estate Credit Union (UCI) would begin financing a major energy efficiency project in both countries with a budget of €100 million. This project would focus on the renovation of existing buildings, as well as the construction of new buildings with near-zero energy consumption, and would allow, as reported…Europa Press, the creation of up to 1,230 jobs.

According to the figures provided, the project will contribute to the construction of 25,000 square meters of new, low-climate-impact buildings and the renovation of another 450,000 square meters of existing properties. Up to 3,000 people will benefit from these investments, generating savings of 43.7 gigawatt-hours once the project is fully completed.
