We provide grid connection solutions for a new hospital in Panama

The Government of Panama, through the Ministry of Health, has inaugurated a new hospital in the province of Colón, becoming a modern reference center for healthcare in the region.

Due to the need to ensure the connection of this hospital to the electrical grid, the main electrical contractor of the project entrusted Ormazabal to carry out the integration with the power plant, which globally controls all supply and energy distribution paths of the facility.

To achieve this, the hospital has an internal medium-voltage network protected and controlled by Ormazabal switchgear and protection and automation equipment. Given the critical nature of this infrastructure, the hospital has an emergency power plant of 8.4 MW, consisting of four diesel generators of 2.1 MW each.

The solution provided, thanks to the flexibility of Ormazabal equipment and a synchronization cabinet specifically designed for this application, enables an operation that guarantees continuous and reliable power supply, minimizing restoration times in case of anomalies and ensuring service to the community.

Ormazabal solution:

The proposed solution includes the supply of all necessary equipment to serve this substation. Among others, it incorporates the supply of medium-voltage switchgear, protection devices, a substation automation controller, and a diesel generator synchronization controller, specifically designed to ensure that all installed power is available by paralleling the four units.

The installation features two specific controllers. On one hand, a substation automation controller whose purpose is to monitor various electrical variables and control the status of all switchgear. This controller also monitors the state of the grid supply, acting as the master that initiates the transfer sequence to or from generators and implements load transfer management. The substation controller also enables interconnection with other systems such as BMS via DNP3.0 communication protocol, providing flexibility in operating the facility.

On the other hand, a synchronization cabinet monitors and operates the diesel generators. This cabinet starts, synchronizes, and connects the four units, ensuring total safety both electrically and for personnel during operation. A local touch SCADA allows an operator to know in detail the status not only of the generator sets but also of the entire installation. Like the substation controller, the synchronization cabinet allows interconnection with BMS systems via standard communication protocols.

Ormazabal challenge:

Provide the client with a complete and customized solution for automation, protection, and synchronization. Additionally, act as a single point of contact throughout all project phases, from design to commissioning.

Key benefits to clients:

  • Flexibility and design adaptation to needs.
  • Technologically advanced solution that ensures the hospital has a continuous and reliable power supply.
  • System that guarantees the resilience of the facility.
