If 2020 ended with a record share in Spanish renewable generation, consolidating 44% of the electricity generated in the territory as green energy and placing the Iberian country in fourth position in terms of renewable generation volume compared to the rest of European countries, this 2021, key in an economic recovery based on the decarbonization of energy, promises to meet expectations. According to Red Eléctrica Española, 51.5% of the electrical energy produced in Spain until June 23 can be classified as “renewable generation”. That is to say, more than half of Spanish electricity generation is of non-polluting origin or, as the saying goes, green energy; quite a milestone.
The report “Renewable energies in the Spanish electricity system 2020”, published by REE and based on records that began to be dated in the 2007 academic year, shows that in 2020 the Spanish renewable generation park had 59,860 megawatts, 8.7% more than the previous year. This installed capacity also allowed 44% of the total energy generated in Spain in 2020 to be green, with a total of 110,566 GWh – a 12.9% year-on-year increase.
Furthermore, the trend continues throughout 2021, with renewable generation, which has become the majority source, increasing by 19.5% compared to the record year of 2020. Thus, in May, solar photovoltaic energy recorded a monthly production peak of 2,377 GWh, and a share of 11.6% of total national generation. There are also notable daily highs, such as on January 23, when wind power covered 49.6% of the mix, or on May 6, when photovoltaic energy, with 91 GWh, contributed 13.2%. Dates that, if this trend continues, will soon be forgotten by new records for Spanish renewable energy generation.
