What is the situation of renewable energy in Spain?

CIEMAT has published a report on the current state of renewable energy and its future prospects in Spain

The Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research has published, just a few days ago, the study “Analysis of the renewable energy situation in Spain 2016. Outlook to 2020“.

This analysis serves tothermometerto find out what thesituation ofrenewable energy parkSpanish. And will it meet the objectives set out in the program?Horizon 2020‘.

These objectives are:

  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 20% compared to the levels recorded in 1990.
  • The use of 20% renewable energy as a source of generation.
  • The 20% increase in terms of energy efficiency.

Renewable energy, still far from traditional energy sources

To break down the current Spanish reality, the report is structured as follows:three major areasIn afirst pointdelves into thedetailed description of the situationof renewable energies in Spain. To do this, it breaks down, separately, primary energy, final energy, and gross final consumption. Thus, the study yields the following figures:

Energía Primaria España.png

The current share of renewable energy in energy consumptionprimary energy– the energy contained in fuels, before going through the transformation processes to final energy – in Spain is of14%. Far from sources like oil or natural gas, which are still predominant.

Energía Final España.png

The share of renewables, provided we combine renewable electricity and thermal renewables, is somewhat higher in consumption.final energy– energy as used at the points of consumption – in Spain. Thus, this occupies a15,9%of the total, although it is still far from petroleum products, which at 52.6% continue to create considerable dependence.

Finally, and in terms ofgross generationOf the electricity generated by source, renewable energy is the absolute leader with almost 105 GWh of power generated, representing38,1%of the gross electricity generated in 2016.

Analysis of the challenges

He second pointThe report focuses on a detailed analysis of thefulfillment of the challenges outlinedin the National Renewable Energy Action Plan. A plan under the auspices of the European directive.

This reveals the situation of:

  • Biofuels.
  • Solar thermal energy.
  • Thermal biomass.
  • Geothermal energy.
  • The very situation of renewables as a source of electricity generation (hydroelectric, wind, photovoltaic solar, thermoelectric solar, etc…).

From this part we obtain aclassificationdetailed information on which autonomous community is a leader in the use of which renewable energy:

An essential role of REE

Finally, in athird section, some are carried outfinal considerationswhich indicates what to do to achieve the goal of a 20% contribution from renewable energy by 2020.

Thus, it can be deduced that, in order to achieve the target of a 20% contribution from renewable energies by 2020, the role ofRed Eléctrica de España is fundamentalEspecially in its role as an integrator of electricity generation from renewable sources, thanks in large part toSpecial Regime Control Center(SEARCH).

Furthermore, the report itself suggests the need forimplement reformsthat promote the development of renewable energies within the thermal sector. Such as biomass, which, as the study shows, is still largely undeveloped, or solar and geothermal energy.
To do this, it is suggested to rely on afinancial musclepowerful. Just like in agrant networkthat allow the proper deployment of this type of energy, without forgetting biofuels as a partial replacement for hydrocarbons.
