NAenCAT - Smart Grids in Catalonia

He NAenCAT projectIt aims to be a benchmark for new smart grids, providing innovative sensor systems, remote control and distributed automation to the electricity grid of Catalonia.

Goals:

The project aims to develop new sensors based on low-cost criteria and adapted to the technical characteristics of Catalonia’s electricity grid, thereby increasing our understanding of grid activity. Furthermore, it will expand the capabilities of existing remote control systems, making them more robust and less expensive, thus enabling more flexible grid operation and faster deployment. The project will also study the potential benefits of energy storage systems for grid operation and their integration into remote control. An innovative solution for distributed intelligent automation will be incorporated to complement the current centralized remote control solution, allowing the grid to self-heal in the event of a fault. Finally, advanced algorithms will be developed for the proper coordination of the systems and technologies described above, as well as for transforming the data generated by these systems into useful information. In this regard, grid models will be combined with sensor data to obtain cost-effective estimates of the grid’s state.

All these technologies will be installed and validated on the network, in order to study their impact and benefit compared to current systems and thus be able to plan their massive installation in the medium term, turning the electricity network of Catalonia into an even smarter network.

With all this, NAenCAT will contribute to an increase in the observability, security and flexibility of distribution networks.
