The Spanish Government approves the Electricity Transmission Network Planning 2021-2026

The Electricity Transmission Network Planning has an investment of 6,964 million euros allocated to developing the necessary infrastructure to adapt electricity networks to a green future

On March 22nd, the Spanish Government approved the so-called Electricity Transmission Network Plan, with a timeframe set between 2021 and 2026, which establishes an investment plan aimed at developing the country’s electrical infrastructure to continue guaranteeing a secure and reliable electricity supply.to promote the ecological transition processWith the operational objective of achieving a 67% share of renewables in the national electricity generation mix by 2026, which would reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere by 66% compared to 2019 levels, this plan, which will involve an investment of €6.964 billion, includes various projects to promote significant changes in electricity distribution, as well as generating efficiencies and savings in the electricity distribution system. The Spanish Government considers this plan a driver of the country’s economic recovery.

However, the main actions will be aimed at preparing the national electricity system for a new influx of renewable energy generation, in line with the pace set by the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan. The electricity grid is undergoing a complete transformation, given the increasing importance of three key players:renewablesElectric vehicles and electrical energy storage are key factors influencing grid operation, requiring greater interoperability, flexibility, and digitalization of the electricity network; although Spain’s electricity grid is currently among the most advanced in the world.

In terms of energy efficiency, the 2021-2026 Electricity Transmission Network Plan will generate annual savings of over €1.6 billion. Furthermore, this plan has been developed from a sustainable and environmentally responsible perspective, prioritizing environmental and territorial considerations, and maximizing the use of the existing network to avoid environmental impacts in sensitive areas and reduce activities with environmental effects across the territory. To this end, various stakeholders have been involved in developing the roadmap, with a consultation process that, for the first time, has been open to citizens, businesses, and public administrations.
