2021, a historic year for Spanish renewable energy generation

After a record-breaking 2020, in which Spain achieved a green energy share of 44%, Spanish renewable generation continues to break records so far this year.

If 2020 ended with a record share of renewable energy generation in Spain, consolidating 44% of the electricity generated in the country as green energy and placing the Iberian nation fourth in renewable generation volume compared to the rest of Europe, 2021, key to an economic recovery based on theenergy decarbonizationIt promises to meet expectations. According to Red Eléctrica Española, 51.5% of the electricity produced in Spain up to June 23rd can be classified as “renewable generation.” In other words, more than half of Spain’s electricity generation is from non-polluting sources, or, as it’s commonly known, green energy—a significant milestone.

The report“Renewable energies in the Spanish electricity system 2020A report published by REE, based on records that began in 2007, shows that in 2020 Spain’s renewable energy generation capacity reached 59,860 megawatts, an 8.7% increase over the previous year. This installed capacity also meant that 44% of the total energy generated in Spain in 2020 was green, totaling 110,566 GWh – a 12.9% year-on-year increase.

Furthermore, this trend has continued throughout 2021, with renewable energy generation, which has become the majority source, increasing by 19.5% compared to the record year of 2020. In May, solar photovoltaics reached a peak monthly production of 2,377 GWh, representing 11.6% of total national generation. Other notable daily records include January 23, when wind power covered 49.6% of the energy mix, and May 6, when solar photovoltaics, with 91 GWh, contributed 13.2%. If this trend continues, these figures will soon be surpassed by new records for Spanish renewable energy generation.
