Ormazabal meets the technical and safety standards of green ports for gigayachts

Since its first connection point in 2014, Ormazabal has successfully implemented a second connection point to the power supply system for vessels over 100 m in length. The connection is made at medium voltage (6.6 kV), although the supplier’s distribution network is 25 kV. The challenge has been to adapt both systems to meet current technical and safety standards.

Grounding of the interconnection to the ship by means of a resistor with a continuous grounding monitoring system, in accordance with IEEE/IEC 80005.

Ports are a clear target for decarbonization policies and Improving the sustainability of this type of facility. In this case, we took the opportunity to eliminate the use of auxiliary engines so that vessels could refuel while docked. This prevents the emission of thousands of tons of toxic particles and polluting gases, as well as the generation of noise and vibrations.

To achieve this, it is necessary to combine different electrical, power, control and protection components in accordance with the strict IEEE/IEC 80005 standard and other international and local requirements.

All these components (switchgear, transformer, sensors and protection and control systems) are fully integrated into a single enclosure installed on land (40′ ISO container) and are monitored from the vessel by means of innovative digital control and communication systems.
