Ormazabal will help Enedis in its transition to a more sustainable electricity grid.

The energy transition we are undertaking in Europe is putting the electricity grid, the backbone of the electrical system, to the test.

Enedis, the Distribution System Operator of Europe’s largest electricity grid, is committed to making its electricity distribution network strong, reliable, efficient and sustainable. It has set specific targets related to it and has committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 20% by 2025 and becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

For its part, Ormazabal, an expert in customized, high-tech electrical solutions, contributes to decarbonization by developing and manufacturing products that make the grid more efficient and sustainable, through clean energy and efficient processes that minimize its carbon footprint.

Aligned with their respective sustainability goals, and in continuous collaboration for more than 25 years in the development of technological solutions for the electrical grid, both companies signed a contract last year to install a significant number of SF6-free cells in Enedis’ medium-voltage network in the next years.

Although SF6 has extraordinary insulating and dielectric properties, its GWP (Global Warming Potential) is high, so technological alternatives are needed. In this sense, and before the final European regulations on fluorinated gases, Enedis launched a tender for the purchase of SF6-free equipment with a significant award to Ormazabal. The objective is to work together on the most appropriate technical solution required by the future electricity grid and that is free of fluorinated, toxic and eco-toxic gases.

Ormazabal, which continuously invests in R&D to develop sustainable and digitally native products, will supply a new generation of cells and, together with Enedis, will carry out the approval and field testing phases that will allow the future industrial solution to be achieved.

Both companies have a clear commitment to sustainability and digitalization using cutting-edge technologies, and this milestone represents a clear statement on that path.
