SHUNT - Hybrid System for a New Circuit Breaker

This project is led by ORMAZABAL and COMPANY, in collaboration with ORMAZABAL PROTECTION & AUTOMATION and the ORMAZABAL CORPORATE TECHNOLOGY technology center.

The SHUNT project is part of the Basque Government’s “HAZITEK” program. It runs from 2020 to 2022.

Goals:

The main objective of the project is to develop a solution that allows the management of electrical energy both for the integration of renewable energy sources and its distribution towards consumption, where the concept of circular economy is established as a fundamental requirement.

Others:

The concept of a circular economy will be achieved by:

  1. Promoting the lowest environmental impact by using SF6-free insulation for the standard line switchgear of the Cosmos 24 kV/630 A/25 kA family. This will require a design based on the concept of a “vacuum bottle in parallel with the main circuit”.
  2. Promoting the concept of reuse, we are seeking a drop-in solution that not only allows for a fully interchangeable cell with the existing SF6 cell and of the same dimensions, but also utilizes all of its standard components. Maintaining the same size will eliminate the need for modifications to existing substations, thus reducing the environmental impact. Furthermore, using existing subassemblies from the SF6 system will result in fewer components, increased reliability, durability, and improved validity of operating, maintenance, and end-of-life instructions.
