Sustainable transport: examples and main trends in transport decarbonization

With the focus on reducing emissions, sustainable transport becomes the main asset for the electrification of mobility

As Newton’s third law dictates, every action generates an equal but opposite reaction. A theorem with countless applications in real life and that is completely valid for the carbon footprint that human beings cause with our lifestyles. Whether on the way to work or traveling for leisure, every time we use a conventional means of transport we negatively affect our environment by emitting polluting particles into the atmosphere; these contribute to increasing the effect of climate change. Faced with this situation, and with the aim of stopping this irreparable damage to our planet, society is immersed in an energy transition towards decarbonization; a momentum in which sustainable transport appears as a notable alternative.

Thus, talking about sustainable transport means talking about a type of mobility that takes into account both the environmental impacts caused by gas emissions, as well as the economic and social impacts in terms of equity and the right to use efficient, clean, and accessible transport. Thus, the concept of sustainability in transport is closely linked to not compromising generations through a short-term vision, but rather betting on those technologies and methodologies that minimize our impact at all levels. Technologies that are fully linked to the increase in the contribution of renewable energies to our energy mix and their introduction, through the use of electric technology, into our current transport models.

The emergence of the electric vehicle has revolutionized the grid

This concept is based on the proliferation of different capabilities that, in recent decades, have demonstrated that a world based on clean energy is possible. This phenomenon is based on the rise of renewables, whose competitiveness is causing a significant drop in energy prices in those countries with a greater commitment to this technology; in the emergence of energy storage in all its forms, allowing the subsequent use of unused clean energy; or in the consolidation of the electric vehicle, whose market share is only growing supported by a growing charging infrastructure.

Examples of sustainable transport

At this point, perhaps the most interesting thing is to look at some of the best examples and practices on sustainable transport. Let’s go for them:

  • Use of public transport:
  • Promoting the use of non-polluting vehicles:
    • BicycleElectric VehicleVehicle Hydrogen

    • Biofuel Vehicle

  • Electrification and hydrogenation of goods and mass transport:

    • Train
    • Airplane
      • Hydrogen

      • Electric

    • Boat
      • Hydrogen

      • Electrical
