The Spanish Government approves the Electricity Transmission Network Planning 2021-2026

The Electricity Transmission Network Planning has an investment of 6,964 million euros destined to develop the necessary infrastructure to adapt the electricity networks to a green future

On March 22, the Government of Spain approved the so-called Electricity Transmission Network Planning, whose time horizon is set between the years 2021-2026, and which sets on the horizon an investment plan destined to develop the country’s electrical infrastructure to continue guaranteeing a secure electricity supply and iboost the ecological transition process with the operational objective of a 67% participation of renewables in the national electricity generation mix by 2026, which would reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere by 66% compared to those registered in 2019. This plan, which will have an investment of 6.964 billion euros, includes different projects to promote important changes in electricity distribution, as well as the generation of efficiencies and savings in the electricity distribution system. Thus, the Government of Spain considers this plan as a driver of the economic recovery of the Iberian country.

Overall, the main actions will be aimed at preparing the national electricity system for a new contingent of renewable generation at the pace set by the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan. The electricity grid is in the midst of a revolution, given the increasing importance of three agents: renewables, electric vehicles, and electricity storage. These condition the operation of the network, requiring greater interoperability, flexibility, and digitalization of the electrical grid; although Spain’s electricity grid is currently among the most advanced in the world.

Data from the Electricity Transmission Network Planning 2021-2016

In terms of energy efficiency, the Electricity Transmission Network Planning 2021-2026 will lead to annual savings estimated at more than 1.6 billion. Furthermore, the development of this plan has been carried out from a sustainable and environmentally friendly perspective, prioritizing environmental and territorial conditions, as well as providing greater use of the existing network to avoid environmental impacts in sensitive areas and reduce actions with an environmental effect on the territory. To this end, various social stakeholders have been involved in the development of the roadmap; with a consultation process that, for the first time, has been opened to citizens, businesses, and administrations.
