We design advanced solutions for Data Centers with maximum reliability

In today’s digital age and with the growing dependence on technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and large-scale data processing, data centers are emerging as indispensable critical infrastructures. These nerve centers not only support global connectivity, but also boost technological innovation and play a fundamental role in the continuous evolution of society towards an increasingly interconnected future.

This data center, which has been classified as TIER 4, has a total installed capacity of 31.50 MW and will be built in 2 phases of 15.75 MW each.

Ormazabal Solution:

The solution proposed by us involves, on the one hand, the supply of 4 distribution centers for Fully digitalized medium voltage to distribute loads between the two different connection lines of the distribution company or the diesel generation plant in case of emergency. On the other hand, 10 medium-voltage to low-voltage transformation centers are included, with the aim of supplying the information technology equipment and servers distributed throughout the building.

In the distribution centers or ‘Main MV Board’, the solution is composed of fully gas-insulated switchgear, IAC AFL classified in the L-Rb-2V-5V configuration. These switchgear have voltage presence-absence detectors, integrated remote control and battery-backed communications. In addition to the above, the output switchgear group that supplies the critical loads is equipped with multifunction advanced protection relays. These centers are where power is transferred between the grid and the emergency generation plant.

On the other hand, the solution for the 10 transformation centers, called ‘Transformer Substation’, consists of 2LV groups with local Track 1 – Track 2 transfer automation. This provides fault tolerance at the center level, since the automation operates autonomously even in the event of a communications failure, ensuring that the loads are always connected to the feeder line, Track 1 or Track 2, that is energized at all times. The solution consists of line cubicles with a fault crossing detector with integrated communications, and vacuum interrupter cubicles with integral gas insulation, equipped with a multifunction protection relay. The entire automation is coordinated by an Ormazabal RTU backed up by batteries. It is worth mentioning that, as in the ‘Main MV Board’, the cells have IAC AFL classification.

Challenge:

With full fault tolerance being the main requirement of a data center with the highest TIER classification, close collaboration between us and the client from the early stages of the project has proven to be key in designing a solution that not only contributes to this classification, but also provides additional levels of redundancy.

The cgmcosmos family cells, as well as the ekorsys family electronic IEDs, together with a careful design of the indoor MV power supply network, have proven to be key in helping our client achieve its objective to ensure full infrastructure availability with the highest degree of fault tolerance.

The solutions we deliver that are calibrated and tested at the source contribute to shorter commissioning times than other solutions that require field installation and calibration. This enables faster deployment of new Data Centers, a differentiating factor in today’s global market.
