We presented our investment plan to the Lehendakari during his visit to the Igorre plant

  • This plan, involving an investment of over 35 million euros for our Igorre plant and our future headquarters in Derio, aims to expand industrial capacity, incorporate fluorinated gas-free technological solutions, boost business digitalisation, and advance our commitment to energy transition and sustainability.
  • As part of this transformation, Lehendakari Imanol Pradales visited the new production line for SF₆-free technology switchgear at the Igorre plant. He was accompanied by the Minister of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi; the President and Vice President of Velatia, Javier and Alejandro Ormazabal; the CEO of Ormazabal, Jorge González; and the plant director, José Luis Bilbao.
  • With this ambitious investment plan for the 2024–2026 period, we reaffirm our commitment to industrialisation, job creation, and the economic development of the region.

At Ormazabal, we continue to advance our strategic growth plan with a 35 million euro investment planned for 2024–2026. This investment will be allocated to expanding and modernising our production centres in Igorre and consolidating our new headquarters in Derio at the Technology Park.

During his visit to the Igorre plant—Ormazabal’s largest industrial facility—Lehendakari Imanol Pradales saw first-hand the progress of the investment plan being implemented at this site, with a budget of 20 million euros. He was accompanied by the Basque Government’s Minister of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi; Velatia’s President and Vice President, Javier and Alejandro Ormazabal; Ormazabal’s CEO, Jorge González; and the plant director, José Luis Bilbao.

This investment plan reflects Ormazabal’s strong commitment to the energy transition, through a firm focus on technology and innovation. Thanks to this initiative, we have begun serial production of our new family of SF₆-free switchgear, a solution that has been well received by the market and positions Ormazabal as a leader in the development of safe and sustainable solutions for the electrical grid.

The goal of this industrial commitment is to equip the Igorre plant with the most advanced technology for producing our new ‘cgm.zero24’ switchgear family, ensuring the supply of fluorinated gas-free solutions for both domestic and international markets. This product line represents a key step in Ormazabal’s strategy toward a safer, more sustainable, and efficient electrical grid.

Since its launch over 35 years ago, the Igorre plant has become one of the main economic and social drivers in the region, significantly contributing to job creation, wealth, and added value. With a team of over 600 professionals, the facility maintains close collaboration with the industrial value chain, working in coordination to strengthen the local production network, as well as with nearby training centres and universities to foster regional talent.

We are also making progress on launching our new facilities at the Bizkaia Science and Technology Park, which will house the core of our most digital solutions and become our new global headquarters. This project, involving a 15 million euro investment, will bring together a multidisciplinary team of around 200 professionals, consolidating a space for innovation and technological collaboration.

With these investments in manufacturing and R&D, Ormazabal is preparing to meet the sector’s growth and demand, while promoting wealth generation and regional development. Currently, we have a team of 1,200 professionals in the Basque Country, generate over 2,000 indirect jobs, and invest around 175 million euros annually in purchases from Basque suppliers. All of this reaffirms our commitment to industrial activity as a driver of transformation toward a more sustainable and efficient electrical grid, from the region where we have been headquartered for nearly six decades.

Commitment to technology and sustainability

Technology, innovation, and a commitment to sustainability are fundamental pillars of Ormazabal’s strategy, along with driving key trends such as energy transition, digitalisation, and cybersecurity.

In this context, we are firmly committed to R&D&I as a driver of competitiveness, aiming to optimise processes, manage facilities and equipment more efficiently, reduce operational and maintenance costs, minimise environmental impact, and develop new products and services.

In 2024 alone, Ormazabal had a team of 115 professionals dedicated to research and allocated approximately 4% of its revenue to R&D&I activities, reinforcing our position as a leader in the development of advanced technological solutions for the electrical grid of the future.
