Doncaster Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project – Supporting the expansion of renewable energy generation

This is a 10MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Doncaster, Yorkshire. The facility will provide a range of balancing services to the electricity grid to ensure electricity security, system flexibility and support the expansion of renewable energy generation in the UK.

Edina, an experienced UK-based power generation engineering, procurement and construction (“EPC”) contractor, is assembling the turnkey EPC project and will thereafter provide ongoing operation and maintenance (“O&M”) to ForePower under an O&M services agreement. Edina is an authorized Battery Energy Storage System integrator for CATL (the world’s largest battery manufacturer).

We were awarded a contract for the supply and delivery of a substation consisting of MV/LV switchgear, protection and control.

Edina specializes in the engineering, installation and maintenance of gas-fired and hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plants, mission-critical backup power generation and integrated battery energy storage systems.

ForePower Ltd develops and operates renewable and battery storage assets to balance supply and demand across the UK. To complement the existing operational portfolio in the UK, ForePower Ltd aims to expand its current operational portfolio to 1 GW over the next 4 years.

Ormazabal Solution and Challenge:

Supply and delivery of a 33kV 630A IEC cgm.3 substation, according to the client’s specifications and program.

The main innovative feature of this project was the perfect integration of Ormazabal products with relays, meters and equipment from third parties. The substation was installed, completed and tested at our facilities prior to delivery, thereby reducing execution time and potential risks on site.

This project demonstrated our ability to deliver complex solutions in the RES sector to meet our customers’ needs. In addition, it strengthens our position in the renewable energy sector and increases our presence in battery storage.
